People often without knowing it mix up these two terms, they use one of them when they really mean the other. With this post I just want to straighten out the facts and explain how it all comes together. This will be a pretty basic post, but if you have trouble knowing the difference between them, this will help you a lot.

To put this simply, self-esteem is your own opinion of your overall worth in any aspect of life. You can say it’s a measure on how much you like yourself. Self-confidence is your belief in your ability in a special task or area of life. This means that self-confidence can vary between different tasks you engage in.

Let’s take an example. A tennis player may have incredible high self-confidence in the tennis court. This because the tennis player know that he or she is very good at tennis and can win over most other players. But if you put this same person behind a guitar, he or she might have very low self-confidence.

A person with high self-esteem have the belief that he or she easily can obtain new knowledge and abilities and become good at a new task. While a person with low self-esteem usually don’t think he or she can be that good at anything.

So the important thing here is probably obvious to you. The most important thing in life is to have high self-esteem. Many people think it’s the best thing in the world to have good self-confidence in some area. And sure it doesn’t have to be bad, but with low self-esteem you don’t have the opportunity to rise further into other areas of life and you will probably not be as happy as you could be.
