Bows have been absolutely everywhere this year and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. Here’s how to wear yours.

Standing on the shoulders of balletcore and Regencycore, the big bow trend ruled 2023.

Dainty tied-up ribbons and huge statement bows featured noticeably on Fashion Week catwalks all over the world this year. Simone Rocha runways even saw little bows being affixed directly onto models’ faces for autumn/winter 2023.

We’re certainly not suggesting that specific look is one for everyone to wear down the pub or office, fierce though it may be. But bows are a trend that’s not going anywhere anytime soon, and what better place for a bow than in our hair?

To help us get the look nailed down, we’ve got tips from Laura Elliott, a head stylist and educator at professional hair specialists Neäl & Wølf, on how to wear bows in different hair types.

Shorter hair

Elliott says: “For short hair, smaller bows are a great option to prevent the bows from overpowering your look. Bows attached to clips also work well for shorter lengths as they tend to stay in place for longer. Bobbles or tied ribbons can slip, especially if your hair is silky and smooth.”

Pixie cuts

“Mini bows add a delicate touch without being overwhelming,” Elliott explains. “These can be added throughout the hair for a more eye-catching, editorial look. Headbands with bows attached can be used as an alternative to prevent bows slipping while still adding drama and style to your look.”

Longer hair

“Large bows work best with long hair as small bows tend to get lost,” says Elliott. “For a more relaxed and undone look, opt for ribbon. Tie the ribbon around a half up/half down ponytail and leave the ends of the ribbon to fall along with the hair. Try placing a discreet bobby pin through the ribbon tie to secure it in place.”

Curly/coily hair

“For an easy up-do that’s on trend,” says Elliott, “gather your hair into a messy high bun and attach a large bow-clip to the back or the front. Thick curly hair looks gorgeous with a large, deep-coloured velvet bow. Mini bows could also be used to pin small pieces of hair, such as the fringe, back away from the face.”
