According to eye doctors, it is very important to know how to keep your eyes healthy and infection free when wearing contact lenses. Read on to know some good, simple, and easy tips to avoid any discomfort.

Millions of people across the world wear contact lenses and doctors are horrified with the fact that at least 99 per cent of them engage in one risky or unsanitary behaviour with their lenses.

Even though contact lenses are the safest and most convenient way to correct your vision, and see clearly and confidently, if they are not worn or cared for properly can put you at risk of eye infections or even damage.

Here is a list of dos and don’ts which you can follow to keep yourself free of any eye ailments.

Things to keep in mind while using contact lenses

  • Always wash your hands properly with soap and water before touching your eyes or contact lenses. After rinsing, make sure to dry them with a lint-free towel, or else the contacts might get damaged.
  • Once you take out the contacts from your eyes, never forget to disinfect them before storing them. Always use the cleaning solution that is provided by your doctor.
  • Once every three months, wash and clean the lenses with warm and soapy water and replace the solution every two weeks.
  • Always remove the lenses from your eyes when going swimming, or showering. Never go to sleep wearing contacts, it might cause eye irritation and even infection.
  • Always keep a pair of glasses handy in case you have to remove the contacts.
  • Never buy contact lenses without a doctor’s prescription.

Never do these things with your contact lenses

  • Never wear contact act lenses for a longer time than you are supposed to. Always ask your doctor about the maximum time you can wear the contacts.
  • If you are wearing the lenses, do not rub your eyes, as it might damage the cornea.
  • Never wash the lenses in running tap water and the impurities in the water might cause damage.
  • Never wear lenses and apply eye make-up as it might irritate the internal areas of the eye, causing redness, swelling, and itching.
