It can get tricky, because mom may notice that the clothes on the market are either for little girls or older teenagers.

Dressing a tween girl is never going to be easy. Gone are the days when a mother’s daughter was young, and would willingly wear anything that mom picked out. Mom could dress them up in whatever they liked, and it was almost like having a real-life doll to play with.

Now that this toddler and preschooler has grown into a tween, they have their own opinion on what they want to wear. They are starting to find their own sense of fashion, and identity. They are finding out who they are, and they want to express themselves through the clothes they choose to wear.

However, at this age, mom still plays a large part in deciding what clothes her tween can wear. This is where it can get tricky, because mom may notice that the clothes on the market are either for little girls or older teenagers. The market for tween-style is not as big, and it can be hard.

Mom needs to find a balance between a t-shirt with something Disney or Peppa Pig on it, and a crop top with the belly showing, which is easier said than done. We have some tips that may be able to help mom and tween daughter build their new closet.

Talk To Them

While you may still get the final say when it comes to what kind of clothes your tween can wear, that doesn’t mean they can’t have an opinion on what they like. They are their own person, and it may be beneficial to ask their opinion. According to Your Teen Mag, sit down and talk to your tween about what kind of clothes they like, and how they want to be perceived by others. While we know that judging someone by how they look is never OK, clothing plays a large part in someone’s first impression. Once you know how your child wants to be seen, it can help narrow down the selection.

Be Unconventional

A big part of dressing a tween may involve getting a bit creative. You may need to think outside the box to pull together some outfits, but it is possible. According to The LA Times, some moms take to the women’s section to get clothes for their tween. They buy the smallest sizes, and then they have them altered to fit. If mom can sew, she can hem and take in where she needs to. The alternative is to take them to a seamstress and have them take them in. This is a great way to make adult clothes work for your tween, and adult sections have more of a selection, and clothes for any “genre.”

Shop Everywhere

According to Orlando Mom Collective, part of the problem could be mainstream shopping. Moms may only know a couple of stores, and they stick to those. They get frustrated by the lack of things there, but they don’t think about shopping somewhere else. The media tells us what is popular, but that may not always be the best option. If your tween wants some unique clothes that are age-appropriate, she can try thrift stores or even online shopping. Look at stores you have never even heard about before, because you may find some great hidden gems.
