How to Get Enough Sleep During a Flight

How to sleep on a plane?

Anyone who has been on long haul flights knows the feeling: after ten, twenty or even more hours you finally arrive at your destination, and you are exhausted!

You barely slept, your body aches from sitting in an airplane seat for hours and you are most likely jet-lagged.

Long flights are not pleasant. But it helps so much if you at least get some good sleep on the plane!

My Tips for Sleeping on a Plane:

  1. Wear comfortable clothes.
I normally bring some comfortable, thick socks as well so that I can take my shoes off and keep my feet warm.
  2. Choose the seat that works best for you.
I get the best sleep on a plane if I have a window seat. But because then nobody has to pass me to go to the bathroom, but also because I like resting my head against the window.
  3. Don’t drink coffee.
Stay hydrated, drink a lot of water but avoid coffee. And I avoid black tea and sugary drinks as well.
  4. Don’t drink alcohol either.
Alcohol might help you fall asleep, but you’ll get lower quality sleep. You’ll most likely wake up feeling groggy and unfocused, which is the last thing you want after a long flight.
  5.  Bring a neck pillow.
I know, they are a little annoying to carry, but they can really help you sleep on a plane and feel more rested.
  6. Use the blankets.
Using a blanket helps you feel more cozy and ready to sleep. Plus, it often gets cold on the plane! If they haven’t handed out blankets, just ask for one.
  7. Use headphones or earplugs.
I like to use headphones to listen to some music and block out the noise. But if you don’t like to sleep with music on, then use earplugs.
