Recently, nutritionist Lovneet Batra took to Instagram to share her top five picks for achieving and maintaining skin health.

Lycopene

Deeming it “your skin’s personal bodyguard,” Batra noted that lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that acts like a natural sunscreen. “Research shows lycopene can reduce sunburn by up to 40%, making it a must for your anti-aging arsenal,” she said.

Individuals can consume cooked tomatoes, watermelons, and papaya to get their daily dose of lycopene.

Isoflavones

Isoflavones are plant estrogens that make your skin bouncy. “Clinical studies indicate isoflavones improve skin thickness and elasticity, visibly reducing fine lines,” Batra explained.

Natural sources of isoflavones include soy milk and tofu, which can be used in smoothies or paneer recipes, as well as lentils that are a staple part of Indian diets.

Vitamin C

According to Batra, vitamin C is the cornerstone of a bright, even-toned complexion. “A daily dose of 75-90 mg can significantly boost collagen, vital for skin strength and elasticity,” she said.

Apart from vitamin C-rich products like masks and serums, you can find an abundance of it in amla (Indian gooseberry), guava, and green and red bell peppers.

Omega-3

Known for its nourishing properties, Omega-3s can “reduce the occurrence of acne and skin redness by up to 42%,” said Batra. Foods like alsi (flaxseeds), walnuts, and chia seeds are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that can help you achieve smooth, clear skin.

Vitamin E

A skin-protecting antioxidant that locks in hydration, vitamin E is the “moisture maven.” “Applying vitamin E can reduce UV damage in the skin, and when eaten, it works wonders in moisturising skin from within,” Batra explained.
