Here are few easy strategies women can implement in their workplace to beat anxiety and cultivate a healthier environment.

In recent years, the burden of workplace stress has weighed heavily on Indian working women, surpassing global averages. A staggering 53% reported higher stress levels in the fiscal year 2022-23 compared to the previous year, with 31% admitting to feeling burnt out, exceeding the global average of 28%. These alarming statistics underscore the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of workplace anxiety among Indian women. Fueled by an interplay of societal pressures, internalized biases and complex organizational cultures, workplace anxiety can take a significant toll on women’s mental and emotional well-being. To combat this challenge, Dr. Ankur Rawat, Lead – Mental Wellbeing Services, HCL Healthcare recommends the following tips:

1. Prioritizing Self-Care

Amidst the relentless demands of the workplace, it is crucial for women to prioritize self-care. This entails ensuring adequate sleep, maintaining a nutritious diet, prioritizing hobbies and incorporating mindfulness practices into daily routines. Whether it involves practicing healthy sleep hygiene rituals, spending meaningful time with family, practicing yoga, meditation or simply taking short breaks throughout the day, dedicating time to self-care is essential for managing workplace anxiety and fostering overall well-being.

2. Cultivating Support Networks

Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of colleagues, friends, and mentors can provide invaluable guidance, encouragement and empathy in navigating workplace challenges. Building meaningful connections and leaning on trusted individuals for support can help alleviate stress and foster a sense of belonging and resilience.

3. Seeking Professional Help

Recognizing the importance of seeking professional support through therapy or counseling is paramount if workplace anxiety significantly impacts daily functioning. Breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and acknowledging that help is available can empower women to proactively address their challenges and develop effective coping strategies.

4. Regular Exercise

Regular physical exercise is not only beneficial for physical health but also plays a vital role in managing workplace anxiety. Engaging in activities such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming, or yoga can reduce stress levels, enhance mood, and promote overall well-being. Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which can counteract feelings of anxiety and promote relaxation and mental clarity.

5. Limiting Screen-Time

Given the pervasive influence of technology in the modern workplace, it is essential to limit personal screen time, particularly on social media platforms. Research has shown that excessive screen time can exacerbate anxiety symptoms, making it imperative to disconnect and prioritize real-life interactions and activities for mental well-being.

By implementing these strategies, Indian working women can proactively address workplace anxiety, cultivate resilience, and create a healthier work-life balance. It is time to recognize the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace and take tangible steps towards fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all employees.
